Hey! I'm Charlie

Software Engineer + Finance + Veteran

About Charlie Botello.

I'm software engineer that thrives in helping organizations solve their challenges through technology. My unique experience in the military and finance have allowed me to have a deep understanding of businesses and the people behind them. I thrive in pushing myself beyond my comfort level to learn new things.

What has led me to this unexpected point in my life? As a teenager I wanted to be of service to something bigger than myself. In order to fulfill this strong desire, I decided to join the military as a Combat Medic. There I went above and beyond learning medical skills that were beyond what I needed. I proved myself a benefit to my fellow Marines during my two tours in Iraq where I received several awards, including a commendation from my superiors.

Upon fulfilling my service to my country, I decided it was time to enrich myself in other ways. I went to college as a veteran, which was an overwhelming experience, unable to relate to anyone at first since my journey up to that point was alien from most of my colleagues. In the spirit of service to others, while in college I started a business. Proud to say I was able to successfully transfer the business over to my bussiness partner.

After graduating from college I wanted to put that degree to good use and went into the Finance industry at Barnett Capital. During my time at the company I worked in a newly establish division, accepting the challenge that comes with it. In the spirit of start-ups, it allowed me to wear multiple hats leading me to increase our division’s data presence, leading me to interact with developers for the first time. At the time I was in pursuit of an M.B.A., but the love and admiration I felt for coding overtook me. Leading me to jump with both feet and pursue a career as a software engineer, and the rest as they say is history.

Experience

Software Engineer Consultant at FDM Group

August 2018 - Present

Software Developer at Actualize

April 2018 - July 2018

MyTownApp: Personally built a web app that allowed users to learn about history in an unique way. It showcases Chicago’s greatest landmarks and allows users to add them to a day planner so they can visit them in the future. The app is written in JavaScript and Ruby, integrates with the Twilio, Google Maps and Chicago Landmarks APIs.

Actualize CRM: Working on a software development team in an agile environment, I added features to the real CRM that Actualize uses to manage its prospective applicants. The CRM allows a user to call and text a lead through the Twilio API, and worked on features involving its UI, including an internal restructuring that transformed the app into a Single Page Application, making it much easier to use. This app uses Ruby, Rails, JavaScript, and VueJS.

Intensive Coding Bootcamp: Attended an intensive 16 week, software development bootcamp where I jumped into Ruby, Ruby on Rails, HTML, CSS, Javascript, AngularJS, Git/GIthub, Bootstrap, React, TDD and Rspec, including best practices, Agile, and REST.

Experiences are more valuable than material objects. There is no place on earth I don't want to explore. Each time I travel it awayls changes me in a possitive way. It's shown me that lessons come from unlikely places and unlikely people, great things lie on the other side of fear, and kindness is an universal language.

Dance

Dancing is an amazing way to find yourself, there is always an unique and creative way to get to the next step. It has taught me determination, self confidence and team work. My favorite types of dances are Salsa, Merengue and Bachata.

History

There is no better way to prepare in life than learning from the past, it helps me to recognize my own mistakes, learn from them and find a way to keep moving forward. My favorite books are "Rubicon: The Last Years of the Roman Republic," "Waterloo: The History of Four Days, Three Armies and Three Battles." The current book on my shelf is "The Pope and Mussolini."
